The assassination attempt sparked a movement of national and international support. Deutsche Welle wrote in 2013 that Malala has become "the most famous teenager in the whole world".

The Orange December campaign was created in 2014 by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD). The action is part of the National Campaign for the Prevention of Skin Cancer. Since 1999, an annual effort to provide free assistance has benefited more than 600,000 people.
